Chick-fil-A’s Secret Sauce: Dipping Into the Power of IOT
Limited Capacity seats available

Chick-fil-A is experiencing a season of huge growth, including double-digit same-store sales increases in the last several years. We are grateful. At the same time, this creates huge challenges with scale. Internet of Things (IoT) is a huge part of our answer. IoT is radically changing the way Chick-fil-A operates in our restaurants, from front-of-house customer-facing systems like Point-of-Sale to back-of-house automation in the kitchen. Many IoT discussions stop at data collection and analytics, but there is significant value to be unlocked in orchestrating the interactions between discreet things to create new customer/employee interactions and to drive process automation. At Chick-fil-A, IoT and Edge Computing are literally changing the way we build and operate restaurants.

In this session, you will learn about Chick-fil-A’s IoT strategy and platform. Why did we develop our own IoT Platform? Why did we make an investment in Edge Computing with Kubernetes? Where are we headed in the future? In this session, we will answer these questions and more.

The Many Faces of LPWA
Limited Capacity seats available

Until recently, most M2M and Internet of Things (IoT) applications have relied on high-speed cellular and wired networks for their wide area connectivity. Today, there are a number of IoT applications that will continue to require higher-bandwidth; however, others may be better suited for low-power wide-area (LPWA) options that not only complement traditional cellular networks but also unlock new market potential by reducing costs and increasing the flexibility of solution deployments.

With LPWA, many alternatives have emerged – some fall under the 3GPP standard and use licensed spectrum such as LTE Cat-M1 and NB-IoT, while other alternatives such as LoRaWAN™ are based on non-3GPP standards and use unlicensed ISM spectrum. IoT certainly has its challenges – from choosing the right device, to adding connectivity and then managing those devices and the data they generate. One thing is certain and that is technology is continuously evolving and changes are on the horizon. Attend this session to learn more about LPWA technology and applications for which unlicensed and licensed spectrums are ideal.

This presentation will draw from customers within Agriculture; Smart Cities, Transportation, Medical and Energy to highlight how implementing new LPWA based technologies are transforming these sectors and creating new business opportunities.

Predictive and Prescriptive Analytics for Chicken Farmers
Limited Capacity seats available

Today, many poultry farmers track their data using pen and paper. This information is collected weekly by a cooperative that often provides the baby chicks, feed, and technical support, and ultimately makes the live birds into food. With our app, Poultry Enteligen, farmers and cooperatives can now record data on a mobile app, which syncs with the Enteligen cloud platform. This platform then provides insights to all parties in real time. One type of insight we provide is: which farms should a poultry expert from the cooperative visit on a given day to maximize the impact that he or she can have on overall wellness and profitability? In what sequence should they visit them? The expert has a certain number of hours in a day, and must visit younger flocks before older flocks for biosecurity reasons, among other constraints such as required visits on certain days of a flock cycle. A second type of insight we provide is: on what day does the cooperative expect each of their flocks to reach the target harvest weight? We will teach you a little bit about poultry farming, and share with you about the insights we provide in our app.

"Oh, It’s Time to Eat My Cheese.” Why IoT is Transforming Customer Experience from Situational Awareness to Behavioral Performance
Limited Capacity seats available

Peter Drucker taught that innovation is an economic effect created by a change in customer behavior.  Disruption occurs when that customer behavior changes faster than businesses can adapt.  Everyone is aware that IoT is a technology driving disruptive change – if not then they have already “lost their cheese.”  But technology-centric businesses often lose sight of users and this could be fatal with IoT because its real impact of is not just situational awareness, its behavioral optimization for both machine and human workflows.  IoT applications are transforming user experience from informational to behavioral and in so doing they close-the-loop on behavioral-driven outcomes in everything from banking to retail to healthcare to manufacturing.

0G Applications for Building Smart and Connected Cities
Limited Capacity seats available

In this session, we will explore how a 0G network can be deployed to support system-wide connectivity and empower cities to manage infrastructure systems.
Building smart and connected cities requires reimaging conventional roles and rethinking what is possible. For example, in a smart city, the role of the Department Streets and Sanitation is no longer limited to maintaining the public right of way. In fact, in cities across the world, Departments of Streets and Sanitation (or their local equivalents) are effectively evolving into Departments of Connectivity. That is, they are deploying and managing an array of connected devices that gather actionable data used to make operational decisions. Similar disruptions in conventional roles can be seen in city departments tasked with managing water, transportation, energy, and other critical infrastructure systems. Urban infrastructure systems are not discrete silos operating in isolation from one another. Neither is connectivity.

Accelerating Your Cellular and Software Development with Managed Services
Limited Capacity seats available

As a developer of IoT products you have several important decisions to make, and foremost among them is this: How much of your cellular development and backend connectivity management will you build vs. buy?
For those of you with diverse engineering teams, broad technical capabilities, and unlimited time, the build route might be your logical choice. But for everyone else – those of you who want to quickly get to market and create value – there are compelling technologies and managed services that can shorten your path to success.

This presentation will reveal the typical process for cellular and software development, and identify those portions where technologies and managed services offer the greatest opportunities for shrinking your time to value.

NimbeLink is a world leader in edge-based cellular connectivity devices and solutions, including end-device certified Skywire embedded modems and application-ready asset tracking solutions. The company makes connecting things to the Internet as fast and as easy as it can be, eliminating risk and accelerating value creation.

OptConnect, a long-time customer of NimbeLink, provides secure, monitored wireless connections for unattended equipment such as ATMs, kiosks, and digital signs. The company also offers a connectivity managed-service platform that enables you to manage and monitor your devices and your data 24/7.
Building your own platform and user interface with similar capabilities would require significant amounts of software development. NimbeLink and OptConnect will lead you through the projected development time for each of the following functionalities:

  • Creating a bi-directional communications link
  • Off-network monitoring and reconnection
  • FOTA updates for the device, modem and module
  • Remotely turn off and restart your device
  • Carrier certification
  • Carrier monitoring
  • Device analytics and monitoring
  • Security
  • Power Management
So, whether you deploy dozens of connected devices or thousands, only you can decide where the ideal spot is for your use case on the Build vs. Buy continuum.

A Day in the Life… With the IoT in 2024
Limited Capacity seats available

It's 6:17 am, Friday, November 15th. The year is 2024. You’re in bed, half asleep. The lights and music came on 13 minutes early because you didn't do laundry last night. Luckily, one of your dirty shirts knows it will make it through the day if you toss it in the dryer with a fabric softener sheet and damp washcloth while you shower. You close your eyes tight and roll over, but your latte machine buzzes in to let you know that if you don't get up now, your coffee will be released to go down the drain. You have no choice. Your connected world is conspiring to get you out of bed and off to work.

Screaming Circuits is building IoT electronics every day. We put the parts on the small connected boards you design and we know the future. Come to Duane Benson's session and see what a day in the life with the IoT will be in the year 2024.

Innovation Improving Every Life
Limited Capacity seats available

Do you know nearly 75% of all deaths in the U.S. are attributed to just 10 causes, with the top three accounting for over 50% of all deaths?

Respiratory diseases are #3 killer in the U.S. followed by heart disease and cancer. About 1 in 12 people have asthma, and the numbers are increasing every year. 50% of asthma cases are not well controlled and the yearly cost of asthma in the U.S. is around $56B! Majority of costs coming from preventable emergency-based care.

In this talk, hear how 3M tackles big problem worth solving through human-centered innovation approach behind the development of 3M™ Respiratory Tracker. This talk will showcase value creation by applying Ecosystem Thinking, co-creation, improving algorithms with design, and optimize product development through crowdsourcing.

Nothing impacts Health & Wellness more than breathing. Breathing is the most elemental of human activities. We inhale and exhale 20,000 times a day without being conscious of what we’re doing. Join us to learn about the journey 3M took to improve every life by delivering Better Breathing.

Mozilla’s Mission to Improve IoT
Limited Capacity seats available

Mozilla has built an open source web of things framework to engage both developers and industry in its mission to improve privacy, security, and interoperability around IoT. Our decentralized framework helps break the vertical "cloud integration" paradigm (where each vendor builds a proprietary silo) and instead gives users ownership and control of their IoT data.

An Integrated Approach to Implementing Cellular Connectivity for IoT Applications
Limited Capacity seats available

Current solutions for implementing cellular connectivity involve putting together various pieces and making them work. This drives up the technical effort and delays time to market. In addition, the operations side has to develop means to manage deployed devices. In this presentation, a new methodology will be presented that unifies the hardware and software into an integrated solution that fundamentally changes the way solutions are developed.

Architecting a Modern IoT Product
Limited Capacity seats available

The adoption of microservices, containerization, and public cloud are all heavily influencing the architecture of modern and scalable IoT solutions and products. With a microservices architecture, your team can build and evolve a complex product with each service deployed independently using different programming languages or cloud services. Deploying your microservices using containers offers both portability and scalability. Leveraging the capabilities and services of a public cloud with effective DevOps practices will enable continuous deployment, integration, testing, and monitoring. In this session, we will discuss and examine all of these topics by reviewing and discussing how an actual IoT product architecture evolved. And of course, we’ll also discuss some lessons learned.

Patent Landscape Overview of IoT
Limited Capacity seats available

The explosive growth in the overall IoT application area is triggering a similarly dramatic growth for IoT-specific patents. This presentation will overview the patenting trends in IoT and what those trends potentially mean for business strategy and start-up initiatives. Patenting trends will be examined on a geographic basis, a market sector/application basis, and a technology basis. This presentation will consist mostly of graphs, charts and other visual representations of keyword analysis that utilizes Google’s BigQuery cloud data warehouse service and their public patent datasets. Wearable Devices Just Might Be the Answer
Limited Capacity seats available

Imagine this. You are a physician visiting with a patient about their current health. They describe an occasional racing heart rate, dizziness, shortness of breath, excess sweating, and general lethargy. You suspect atrial fibrillation and prescribe a Holter Monitor. Forty-eight hours later, you review the data and find nothing. Now what?

Continuous, long-term monitoring of heart rhythms is the answer. One day, two days, ten days, forty-five days later, the monitor is still there, unobtrusively capturing your heart rate, analyzing the complex rhythms, and presenting your physician with suspect cardiac rhythms.

Twenty years ago this would have involved a lot of body burden--a large backpack and motorcycle battery--and required complicated technologies to transmit the data to a healthcare provider where it would be painstakingly subject to human review.

Today, we all know this is much simpler. This talk will describe a modern, unobtrusive, body-worn ECG monitoring system developed at the Mayo Clinic Division of Engineering in collaboration with physicians from cardiovascular diseases and cardiology.
